Before the Antietam Campaign: He was a thirteen-year-old drummer boy when he enlisted with the Ninth New York Infantry Volunteers, Hawkins' Zouaves, on May 4, 1861, and he left the Regiment about 2 years later, in 1863. He later received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Camden, NC, in April 1862. After the War: After later attending law school and opening his own practice, he served as an assemblyman in the New York State legislature and as judge of the Seventh Judicial District Court.
